Climate change represents one of the foremost challenges of our time. With multiple forces at work and wide-ranging consequences at stake, however, reducing CO₂ emissions is only one part of the systemic response needed to bring humanity onto a sustainable pathway. The degradation of biodiversity, loss of fertile land, widespread destruction of forests and wetlands, excessive material consumption and waste generation, pollution of air and water, and so forth, confront us with a broader and interconnected crisis.

That problems of such kind are still widely questioned or downplayed helps explain why the situation is so serious. When human populations were small, technologies rudimentary, and economic activity limited in relation to the lands, seas, and resources surrounding us, the constraints imposed by nature could more easily be overlooked. Today, however, more than eight billion people inhabit the planet. Our capabilities along with the resources and technologies at our disposal inflict an enormous impact on our surrounding environment.  

Yet, nature’s value streams – including the immense benefits generated by the world’s living ecosystems, attain little or no price, and are granted limited consideration when economic decisions are made. We continue, in effect, to consume and degrade the natural assets on which our economies, societies and lives ultimately depend. Unless this changes, we are setting ourselves on a course to destroy the ecological foundations on which any viable human future depends.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) capture the breath of what needs to be dealt with while setting out concrete objectives for action by all countries – developed and developing – through global partnership.

Working closely with domestic and international partners, Qualies pursues a broad range of initiatives – including climate mitigation and adaptation. We engage in reforestation and ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, water management, sustainable food systems, energy and waste solutions, waste mangement, health, and well-being. Across these areas, Qualies welcomes cross-border collaboration, sharing ideas, and engaging in joint initatives and effort to realise solutions to outstanding issues.
