Greening Technologies Rising temperatures, water scarcity, degraded and infertile soils and desertification trends are unfavourable for growing trees through traditional methodology. New greening technologies nevertheless make it possible to implement large scale reforestation projects in that kind of environment. The appropriate technologies have to be carefully examined and tested to match the local conditions.
As a prime method adopted by Qualies, the innovative Groasis technology, including usage of the waterboxx offered by AquaPro allows trees to grow in extremely harsh conditions, even in desert and eroded areas that suffer from extreme scarcity of water. Qualies has distributor rights of the Waterboxx in Oman and possesses nursery capacity to develop seedlings of native species for plantations and ecosystems restoration.
Plantations undertaken in Dhofar in the South of Oman, during summer 2012, reported 98% survival rate. Through the use of the Groasis technology, costs required for both planting and maintenance are greatly reduced compared to conventional methodologies, and the need for water supplies are reduced to a minimum. Prospects for applying such technologies on a large scale in Dhofar, other regions in Oman and countries across the region are most promising.
A key element of Qualies’ reforestation projects is to select the appropriate species and to involve the local populations in the preparations as well as the implementation and follow-up. Local tribes and farmers need to be trained in the application and become aware of the many benefits that stand to be captured down the road. Multiple stakeholders matter however and needs to be brought on board through complementary initiatives.
As an example of an activity in this area, Qualies have initiated collaboration around the Waterboxx with domestic training centres in Oman. A plan is being developed for reaching out to school kids as well as to teachers and engaging them in the endeavour to turn the damage of a deteriorating environment into an opportunity for generating value for the economy and for society through the restoration of ecosystems.
